Edgewood Bulldog Radio, or EBR as the locals call it, was the original station that was the springboard for the 903 family of networks. Started in 2017 by Eric James, Paul Cates, and Brian Nicholson, EBR has grown into a Friday night staple around “The Wood”. The idea was born in 2016 when Paul and Eric were guest broadcasters for the Area Championship game between Edgewood and Whitewright on KWJB 95.1. The next season EBR debuted and since 2017, EBR has broadcasted every Edgewood football game, almost all playoff basketball games, as well as some baseball, softball and volleyball. In that time, EBR has amassed a loyal listening base of fun loving Bulldog fans that tune in to root for their team and to hear the next borderline off-color comment by the broadcast team. The average EBR fan is a little twisted and we like it that way.
Though EBR was the springboard for The 903, Mustang Radio was the official first station to broadcast on the network. When Scott Tyner was hired as the Superintendent for Martin’s Mill ISD, He and Eric James from EBR sat down and scratched out a plan to get radio coverage for the Mustangs. After all, Mill only has one of the most successful basketball programs in our state’s history. Ask any small school basketball fan in Texas, they’ll tell you. There is something unique about small school basketball and the atmosphere in their gyms, you can feel it over the radio. The fans are nuts, the kids will run through a brick wall for a loose ball, and the town closes when the ball is tossed in the air. Most people say there are only two sure things, death and taxes. In Van Zandt County, folks know there is a third. Death, taxes, and Martin’s Mill basketball. Mill hoops can be heard on the 903 flagship station. If you’re born in Wills Point, there is a 60% chance that your first words will be “only the strong survive” (OTSS). It’s even on the water tower. A few years ago Danny LaJone and friends broadcasted Wills Point football for Tiger fans via internet radio. They quickly garnered a solid base of listeners that enjoyed the laid back, snarky humor from the broadcast crew. Though their station was successful, Danny and his crew decided to step away from the microphone and temporarily forgo the radio broadcast. Fortunately, they’re back on the air this year with their brand new station, OTSS Radio. Even though Wills Point has had a challenging couple of years in football, the town has a rich football tradition and hundreds of blue hoodie wearing loyalist that will no doubt make OTSS Radio successful. We look forward to big numbers from them this fall.
Kenny started On the Call, or OTC as we call it, in 2018 and covered local sports including football, basketball, and baseball. Schools that have benefited from On the Call include Mt. Vernon, Tyler All Saints, Whitehouse and most recently Lindale. In 2023, Kenny decided to bring On the Call to the 903 platform and we are pumped. Kenny’s prep work and delivery makes for a professional quality call that will rival broadcast crews at any level of sports. 903’s commitment to superior sound quality married with OTC’s prep work and delivery makes for the perfect team. OTC will once again be on the call for Lindale Eagle Football in 2023 and can be heard on the 903 flagship station each Friday night during football season.
